Because I could not stop for death

By Emily Dickinson

Because I could not stop for Death –
He kindly stopped for me –
The Carriage held but just Ourselves –
And Immortality.

We slowly drove – He knew no haste
And I had put away
My labor and my leisure too,
For His Civility –

We passed the School, where Children strove
At Recess – in the Ring –
We passed the Fields of Gazing Grain –
We passed the Setting Sun –

Or rather – He passed us –
The Dews drew quivering and chill –
For only Gossamer, my Gown –
My Tippet – only Tulle –

We paused before a House that seemed
A Swelling of the Ground –
The Roof was scarcely visible –
The Cornice – in the Ground –

Since then – 'tis Centuries – and yet
Feels shorter than the Day
I first surmised the Horses' Heads
Were toward Eternity –

Sonnet 18

Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate.
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer's lease hath all too short a date.
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimmed;
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance, or nature's changing course untrimmed.
But thy eternal summer shall not fade
Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow'st;
Nor shall death brag thou wand'rest in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou grow'st,
So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.
-Shakespeare

Love and other quotes

At the touch of love everyone becomes a poet.
Plato

A good decision is based on knowledge and not on numbers.
Plato

A hero is born among a hundred, a wise man is found among a thousand, but an accomplished one might not be found even among a hundred thousand men.
Plato

Thou wouldst as soon go kindle fire with snow, as seek to quench the fire of love with words.
William Shakespeare

A dream within a dream

A Dream Within A Dream
by Edgar Allan Poe

Take this kiss upon the brow!
And, in parting from you now,
Thus much let me avow--
You are not wrong, who deem
That my days have been a dream;
Yet if hope has flown away
In a night, or in a day,
In a vision, or in none,
Is it therefore the less gone?
All that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream.

I stand amid the roar
Of a surf-tormented shore,
And I hold within my hand
Grains of the golden sand--
How few! yet how they creep
Through my fingers to the deep,
While I weep--while I weep!
O God! can I not grasp
Them with a tighter clasp?
O God! can I not save
One from the pitiless wave?
Is all that we see or seem
But a dream within a dream?

Chinese Proverbs

Have a mouth as sharp as a dagger but a heart as soft as tofu.

It is easy to dodge a spear that comes in front of you but hard to keep harms away from an arrow shot from behind.

Without rice, even the cleverest housewife cannot cook.

You think you lost your horse? Who knows, he may bring a whole herd back to you someday.

Shakespeare quote

Now is the winter of our discontent
Made glorious summer by this son of York;
And all the clouds that low'r'd upon our house
In the deep bosom of the ocean buried.

This quote is from Shakespeare's play Richard the Third. I liked the reference to a season of discontentment giving way to better things. Life is often that way in many circumstances. I decided to name this blog that in an effort to look toward the positive and be encouraged that "summer" will come eventually. It has been a challenging year as I left the job I had for 3 years in pursuit of a new career in the healthcare field. I have yet to obtain a new job and sometimes I get restless and impatient but I know it will all work out eventually and I should enjoy how things are now.
